The Quarter Horse business started in our small country in 1980 when Josef Kockelmann acquired the gelding Poco Fig Bar (Reg. N°: 0763537), the first Quarter Horse in Luxembourg.
In 1993, the Quarter Horse population having increased to 38 horses, the Quarter Horse Association Luxembourg (QHAL) was founded and Claude Flammang was elected as its president, by a large majority among the Quarter Horse owners in Luxembourg. In autumn the same year the new born association held its first AQHA approved Quarter Horse Show in Kobenbour/Luxembourg attracting competitors of german, french, belgian, luxembourgish and american nationality.
During 1994, the QHAL signed responsible for two AQHA approved shows. The autumn show was held in Bettange/Mess and in July an additional Quarter Horse show was organized during the national live stock and agricultural fair in Ettelbrück/Luxembourg. In a period of seven days all luxembourgish equine breeding associations present their breeds at this fair, making it the most important event in the luxembourgish horse business. The same year the QHAL, acquired a permanent seat in the executive committee of the National Studbook Federation, meaning that the QHAL is the legally recognized representative in Quarter Horse breeding for Luxembourg.
1995 brought another new Quarter Horse Show, setting the number of AQHA approved shows to three for this year. The doubling of the luxembourgish Quarter Horse population awarded Luxembourg the most important increasing rate throughout the world.
Beginning of 1996, the total number of Quarter Horses in Luxembourg achieved 91 units. In a small country like Luxembourg, with only some 370.000 inhabitants, this would mean one Quart er Horse for nearly every 4000 habitant. This ratio is probably one of the most important in the world. At the annual QHAL convention Claude Flammang withdrew from the president's chair for personal reasons being replaced by Dr. Sc. Paul Didier. During the 1996 season two AQHA approved shows are organized by the QHAL as well as a showlike presentation of Quarter Horses at the national live stock fair.
1997 The QHAL organized two AQHA approved shows and announced at its annual convention the creation of a fund, the Luxincentive Fund, that will reward merits in halter and performance at AQHA shows for Quarter Horses bred in Luxembourg. The QHAL was named international affiliate at the annual convention of the AQHA.
1998: Luxembourg counts 130 Quarter Horses. One Quarter Horse show took place in Strassen, a special event and a double judged split/combined show were organized in Oberdonven.
Since, the QHAL offers each year three to four AQHA shows held here in Luxembourg where international riders chare their passion and present their Quarter Horses.
Besides the QHAL also became a member of the European Federation of Quarter Horse Associations (FEQHA).
2007: Luxembourg counts 266 Quarter Horses.
Many improving Quarter Horses and Quarter Horse owners or breeders from Luxembourg are achieving great success; also in foreign countries like Belgium, Germany, France and the Netherlands.
